Freshwater Startups Highlight Northern Michigan’s Potential as Global BlueTech Leader at Inaugural Accelerator Showcase
Showcase caps seven-week accelerator launched this summer by 20Fathoms and gener8tor
TRAVERSE CITY, MI, UNITED STATES, October 23, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Highlighting Northern Michigan’s potential as a national leader in BlueTech innovation, eight early-stage companies working to protect and manage freshwater pitched to investors, partners and the public Thursday at the inaugural Northern Michigan BlueTech Accelerator Showcase.
The showcase capped a seven-week accelerator launched this summer by 20Fathoms, which helps founders build and scale innovative companies in Northern Michigan, in partnership with the national venture capital firm gener8tor. Startup founders received intensive coaching and access to a national network of mentors, customers, corporate partners and investors.
The companies span the water cycle, including preventing harmful algal blooms, improving irrigation systems, reducing water waste and helping utilities and fisheries agencies make better decisions with data.
“Just as Silicon Valley became synonymous with tech, Northern Michigan can become synonymous with BlueTech,” said Stacey Feeley, executive director of 20Fathoms. “We sit at the center of the Great Lakes with everything a water-tech company needs to grow: testing environments, researchers, capital and a community that cares deeply about this resource. Congratulations to our inaugural cohort on seven weeks of innovation and hard work.”
The Northern Michigan BlueTech Accelerator is supported by the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Build to Scale program, with matching support from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and community partners, including Traverse Connect, the Freshwater Research and Innovation Center and Northwestern Michigan College.
Startups that choose to relocate to the Traverse City area are eligible for a relocation support package from 20Fathoms and the 20Fathoms Innovation Fund—developed with community partners Traverse Connect's Northern Navigators, Northwestern Michigan Community College Marine Technology Program, Northern Michigan Angels and the Meg Zammit Group—to help them establish operations in the region.
The inaugural cohort of the Northern Michigan BlueTech Accelerator includes:
• AmHyTech makes ammonia safer and more affordable to store and handle, helping businesses use it closer to where it is produced and needed.
• CaptureTech helps lake, marina, port, and canal managers prevent harmful algal blooms and restore polluted waterways using recoverable Biochar Capture Packs (BCPs) that capture excess nutrients and contaminants.
• Ceretune provides governments and environmental engineering firms with a low-cost system that uses plants and biofilm to remove excess nutrients and pollutants from water bodies.
• Effluent Technologies helps water utilities make faster, more efficient decisions by giving operators physics-informed, model-enabled tools that identify opportunities to reduce costs, energy use, and compliance risk.
• Growbud helps greenhouse, controlled-environment agriculture, and building operators automate irrigation and environmental systems to reduce costs and improve performance.
• H2O Connected helps hotels and multi-tenant properties reduce water waste by detecting and diagnosing leaks and other problems in tank toilets before they drive up utility costs.
• Oprones helps municipalities and infrastructure operators inspect stormwater and wastewater tunnels and pipelines that are difficult or unsafe for people to enter.
• Thalweg turns raw sonar recordings into fish counts and tracking data, replacing weeks of manual review for fisheries agencies and environmental consultancies.
“Growing the BlueTech industry in Northern Michigan means more good-paying jobs, new investment and a reason for talented people to build their careers here,” Feeley said. “When a founder is deciding where to build a water-tech company, we want to make sure Northern Michigan is at the top of the list.”
